What's Teach Me?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Promoted by the University Iuav of Venice - Faculty of Arts & Design, conceive as a Visual Comunication Festival, party and creativity lab, Teach Me consists of three intense days of workshops and conferences in which students from the whole of Italy (an avarage of 300 partecipants per day) experience the connection between didactical and work fields, job and research, working side by side with internationally acclaimed professionals and teachers: a unique chance whose results gain and attention every year.
With its approach, intentionally multidisciplinary and transversal, “Teach me” is an observatory about the modalities that make those transitions happen, an opportunity to reflect where the guideline is to be found in the key relation that links teachers and students.
A place to experiment new ways of learning and comparing, suggesting give and take approach, the one who teaches is careful about the requirements of the one who is learning, who again, strives to participate in his role of taking, and by doing so, in wider context of a different mode of understanding “the school”, is making it his own.
Arrived at the fourth edition – after former “Teach me. Festival della grafica italiana” (2004), “Teach me. Stories” (2005) and "Teach me. Comunicare l'oggetto." (2006), Teach me is proposing to push the limits between visual communication and fields around it (product design, theatre, art,…), to tempt virtuous trespassing, to identify the unique soul that connects and bonds various disciplines, all of them, however, already represented in the courses at the university Iuav Venice.
The connection between music and the field of visual communication and graphic art for certain in not something new and it is not one-way directional or exclusively professional. Oftentimes it is about common passion, a vital interest among artists that lasts for years, it is about collaborations where it gets complicated to distinguish an individual input.
Recently it has been written in the “Eye” (2007, n.63) that many of the professionals came thru the discovery of graphic art across the record covers. This kind of reality that was one of the centres of recent history of graphic art, in the age of mp3 and downloading, it seems to be at risk. Like Stefan Sagmeister stated: “Cover art is dead”, (“Form”, 2007, n. 213), however, it is suffering of an apparently irreversible crisis. Still, meanwhile new opportunities are offered directly on the web – from MySpace to Cover Flow of iTunes – we are assisting a reborn interest for supports, packaging, covers… therefore, is it really an end?
Besides, the knot between music and visual communication doesn’t mean only cover art, today more then ever, music is communicated throughout the visual channel, video and film, digital processing, visual engineering for live events, specialized magazines, music televisions, radio, web.
To explore this field of intervention together with the best operators of the sector, presenting conferences, meetings, laboratories, shows,… following the leitmotiv of music, is the purpose of Teach me 4. During three days of the workshops, suggestions and motivating force from the designers that work in the field of music will interchange with the planning workshops where attending students will work with the professionals such as Mike Mills, Abäke, Laurent Fetis, Marco Cendron, Fabio De Luca, Francesco Meneghini.
